Our Patients and Their Stories
Support from donors like you enabled us to help Donna, Bill, Pat, and Janet. Read their stories below.
Your support ensured that a family wouldn’t need to decide between buying groceries or paying the rent.
Donna is a 42 year old wife, mother, and AIM (Advanced Illness Management) patient who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, which has spread to the brain. She and her husband—who is currently out of work and receiving unemployment—are raising two young children, ages 5 and 8. To alleviate their immediate financial stress, we were able to provide them with groceries for a month—thanks to our donors’ generous support.
Your support meant that a daughter did not have to choose between caring for her elderly father and caring for herself during her own cancer treatment.
Bill is an 87-year-old home health patient whose sole caregiver is his daughter, Pat—who herself was diagnosed an aggressive cancer. Bill needed help managing at home during the time that Pat would be incapacitated with her own medical treatment and surgery. Thanks to our donors’ generous support, Bill was able to receive some attendant care for the three weeks that Pat was unavailable, easing an extremely stressful situation for both of them.
Your support made it possible to honor a lung cancer patients’ last wish.
Janet, a 38-year-old hospice patient with end-stage lung cancer, very limited financial resources, and no family, needed help during the last months of her life. Janet had always been self-sufficient and independent. In fact, in preparing for her death, she had made arrangements for a whole-body donation in order to cover the costs of her burial. Unfortunately, because of her extreme weight loss, she no longer qualified for the program. She was relieved and very grateful when her hospice social worker told her that we would be able to cover the costs of her burial—thanks to our donors’ generous support.
